Introduction to Health Occupations

Health Occupations is a class that is designed to give students a chance to learn more about the many careers there are in the health field. This class will hopefully assist students to decide if they would like to pursue a health career in the future. This class is designed for juniors who have completed chemistry and have received a C or better.
Introduction to Health Occupations
COURSE GOALS
1. Students will be able to gain perspective on the current trends and future of the health care deliver system.
2. Students will be able to understand and implement safety measures in the health care setting.
3. Students will be able to recognize emergency situations and be able to respond accordingly.
4. Students will be able to distinguish between legal and ethical dilemmas in the health care setting.
5. Students will be able to utilize positive communication and interpersonal skills to achieve personal and professional relationships.
6. Students will be able to recognize and implement basic medical abbreviations.
7. Students will be able to observe a variety health occupations.
8. Students will be able to use job getting and job keeping skills for future employment.
9. Student will be able to assimilate learning through weekly journaling.
10. Students will be able to incorporate healthy lifestyle choices into their own lives.
SHADOWING:
A major component of this class is the shadowing experience. This will consist of students observing a health care provider during the scheduled time and critiquing and sharing information about this career with the class. Students will go in pairs and provide their own transportation to and from the shadowing sites. A shadowing report form will be required to be turned in the following day. Each student will choose four areas of interest that they would like to shadow. Extra shadowing is encouraged and the instructor will assist with these arrangements.
