U.S. HISTORY

2 semesters Required Grade 10 2 credits

 

A study of United States History, since 1865, in which the challenges of the past impact the present. Topics include: war, immigration, industrialization, urbanization, political corruption, reform, human rights, economic depression and world leadership.

 

 

WORLD CULTURES

2 semesters Required or Elective Grade 11-12 2 credits

 

Explore the cultural characteristics and significant historical events of global regions. Units taught include: Iowa Geography, North & South America, Western & Eastern Europe, Africa, East Asia & Asia, and the Pacific World.

 

 

WORLD HISTORY

2 semester Required or Elective Grade 11-12 2 credits

 

Examine history from the beginning of time through current world issues. Units include: Ancient & Early Civilizations, Religion & Philosophy, Renaissance & Reformation, Revolutions, Wars, Archaeology, History today.

 

 

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

1 semester Required Grade 12 1 credit

 

American Government covers the fundamental features of the national government by examining the Constitution of the United States and its effect on the individual citizen. In addition, American Government covers current issues on the national, state and local level.

 

SOCIOLOGY

1 semester Required or elective Grades 11-12 1 credit

Sociology is a study of individual and group behavior to current happenings of today's world. The areas of study will include: The American Culture, Crime as a Social Problem, Understanding Death, Social Stratification and the American Family. A research project on a social problem or current topic is also required.

 

 

Psychology

1 semester Required or elective Grade 12 1 credit

An introduction to the science of psychology. Class provides a good foundation for better understanding your behavior and the behavior of those around you. Study includes both normal and abnormal psychology, how to improve your memory, how to manage stress, aging, death, raising children, and psychological issues in adolescence.

 

 

 

ECONOMICS

1 semester Required or elective Grades 12 1 credit

Economics is a study of the methods people employ to produce and distribute the goods and services they want. A comparison is made between the market, command and the traditional economic systems in order to better understand our free enterprise system. An in-depth research project on a current Economic subject is required.
