SCIENCE
PHYSICAL SCIENCE
2 semesters Required Grade 9 2 credits
Prerequisite: None
Physical Science is a practical study of the relationship between matter and energy. The course offers a relevant introduction to physical laws and chemical processes. The course will include measurements using the International System of Units, the laws of motion, mechanical energy and work, thermal energy and heat, simple machines, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonds, writing formulas, chemical equations, acids, bases and salts, solutions, radioactivity, alternate forms of energy, and nuclear reactions. Laboratory activities are included.
BIOLOGY
2 semesters Required Grades 10-12 2 credits
Prerequisite: None
Biology is the study of life and how organisms interact. The mail topics that will be covered are : Cellular biology, evolution, zoology, and botany. Students will prepare an insect and leave collection during the 1st semester. Lecture and individual work will be supplemented with various labs and dissections.
CHEMISTRY
2 semesters Elective Grades 10-12 2 credits
Prerequisite: "C" or higher grade in Algebra I & Biology or teacher approval.
Chemistry is the study of the structure and properties of matter. The first part of chemistry involves interpreting atomic structures and the periodic table. The second part of the course focuses on using previous knowledge to create and analyze chemical formulas, bonds and reactions. Organic chemistry is also included in the second part of the course. Lab work is an integral part of the course and is included in the grading along with daily work, projects, quizzes and tests.
PHYSICS
2 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits
Prerequisite: "C" or above in Functions/Trig or teacher approval.
Physics is the study of the interaction of matter and energy. Major topics in physics include the study and analysis of motion, forces and wave-pattern behavior. Math is an important part of the physics curriculum since all physics concepts are interpreted and analyzed mathematically. Students need a working knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry in order to be successful in the course. Lab work is an integral part of physics and is included in the grading along with daily work, quizzes and tests.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
2 semester Elective Grade 11-12 2 credits
Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry with "C" averages
Physiology is an elective course for students interested in careers in health related fields. (i.e., medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, medical technology, medical secretary, etc.)
The ten basic systems of the body: skeletal, muscular, reproductive, urinary, digestive, endrocrine, integumentary, nervous, respiratory and circulatory are studied in detail with reference to anatomy (structure) and physiology (the function) of each area. The class will be lab oriented. A large mammal will be dissected as a comparison to the human for anatomical material.
Expectation from students:
Students will be required to take good class notes and keep a notebook of lecture questions, lab drawing and special projects.
