MATHEMATICS & COMPUTERS:
MEDIA DEVELOPMENT (new for 2005-2006)
1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit
Prerequisite: A "C" in General Math or Algebra IStudents will develop skills using multimedia tools, including iLife software (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand) and Final Cut Express (an advanced video editing software). They will also work on broadcast-quality group projects. Students will create their own music, photo, and video productions. Students will also create original music compositions that can be used in video productions with GarageBand. The course will also include some work with the Microsoft Office suite software (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint).
Equipment used in the course will include digital video cameras, still digital cameras, a USB midi keyboard , and digital scanner.
BEGINNING WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT (College credit class)
1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: A "C" or better in Algebra IThis class covers the basics of building a Web Page. Students will learn basic coding with HTML and explore web development products such as Netscape's Composer or Dreamweaver to build a web page. Students will also learn how to post a web page on a web server to be seen on the internet, add graphics, change fonts, add colors, develop navigation, and design tables.
This course will be offered for dual credit. Students will receive 1 credit towards high school graduation and 3 semester hours of NIACC credit, course 15:137
INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING: PERL (College credit class: New for 2005-2006)
1 semester Elective, Spring Only , Grades 9-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Beginning Web Page Development OR Computers I OR Computer Programming: Visual Basic ( a grade of "C" or higher)This course provides students exposure to computer program design, structure, development, and troubleshooting through an examination of such topics as logic concepts, variables, input/output, interactive constructs, conditional flow, modular desigtn, create and manage databases, debugging, cgi scripting, object-oriented programming, and the comparison of programming languages.
This course will be offered for dual credit. Students will receive 1 credit towards high school graduation and 4 semester hours of NIACC credit, course 15:168.
INTERMEDIATE WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT (New for 2005-2006)
1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Beginning Web Page Development OR Computer Technologies ( a grade of "C" or higher)This will be a continuation of the Beginning Web Page Development Course with an emphasis on using Dreamweaver (web design software), Fireworks and Flash (graphics creation and editing software). Students will enhance skills they have learned in any of the other computer courses and apply them towards good web and computer graphic design. This will include creation of computer animated graphics. A part of the course will also include helping update and manage the school district's website.

GENERAL MATH
2 semesters Elective Grade 9 2 credits
Prerequisite: Only for students in Basic 8th grade mathematics
This class is a review of basic operations of arithmetic skills necessary for mathematical survival in the real world. The topics covered will be all operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, measurement, percent, area and volume, statistics and graphs.
ALGEBRA I
2 semesters Elective Grades 9-12 2 credits
Recommended for students who had difficulty with Algebra in 8th grade or who did well in Basic 8th grade Math or General Math (C- or better). This is a traditional Algebra I course. Students need a good grasp of the basic facts. Calculators will be used, but not until several weeks into the course.
Algebra I is a study of different sets of numbers and their properties, factoring polynomials, solving equations, solving verbal problems, operations with rational expressions, systems of linear equations, irrational numbers and radicals.
CONSUMER MATH
2 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits
Prerequisites: General Math I
Consumer Math is a study of consumer buying and spending habits together with a development of the mathematical principles and operations faced by every individual in his daily life. The course deals with units on budgets, automobile ownership, banking as it affects every individual, investments, insurance, housing, taxes, and other topics which will help the student become a knowledgeable and wise consumer. Computation skills will be reviewed as well as ratio and proportion.
GEOMETRY
2 semesters Elective Grade 9 -12 2 credits
Prerequisite: Must have Completed Algebra I with "C-" or better.
This course is recommended for the college preparatory student or anyone academically capable of benefitting from such a course.
This course is an organized logical development of the structure of mathematics by use of inductive and deductive reasoning. The basic topics in Euclidean geometry are studied.
ALGEBRA II
2 semesters Elective Grades 10 -12 2 credits
Prerequisite: Geometry with "C-" or better
This course is recommended for college preparatory students. Review of the basic concepts and skills of Algebra I, a continuing development and understanding of linear and quadratic functions, co-ordinate geometry, complex numbers, system of equations, the logarithmic function, equations of the first and second degree in two variables, the exponential function and trigonometric functions.
FUNCTIONS/TRIGONOMETRY
2 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits
Prerequisite: Algebra II with "C-" or better
This course is recommended for all college preparatory students. In this course students study statistics, probability, and to further work with polynomal, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
PRECALCULUS
2 semesters Elective Grade 12 2 credits
Prerequisites: Functions/Trigonometry with "C-" or better
Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics is a continuation of the Function, Trigonometry and Statistics course (FTS). The course includes topics with logic, analyzing function, functions, equations, and inequalities, integers and polynomials, rational numbers and rational functions, trigonometric identities and equations, recursion and mathematical induction, polar coordinates and complex numbers, the derivative in calculus, combinatories, graphs and circuits, vectors and the integral in calculus.
