INDUSTRIAL ARTS

 

MECHANICS I

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

 

This is a two part class. Nine weeks are dedicated to learning the basics of a 4 cycle internal combustion engine. The student will learn the parts of the engine as well as their functions. The grade will be determined by both written and performance tests. The second half of the class will cover the discovery of flight. We will learn what makes a heavier-than-air machine fly. Material in the class will include the computer and building models.

 

CONSUMER MECHANICS

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

 

This class is designed for the students who want to understand how their car functions but do not want to take a mechanics class. The class will cover one area of the automobile each week starting with the body and proceed through the engine train and related systems. There will be written and performance tests throughout the class.

DRAFTING I

2 semesters Elective Grades 9-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: None

 

This course will allow the students to improve their drafting communication skills. Work will be done in the areas of line quality, neatness and accuracy. Students will be required to complete a variety of different types of drawings. Computer aided drawing and design are also covered. Math skills, patience and problem solving will help the students complete the drawings.

 

ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING

1 semesters Elective Grades 10-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: "C" average in Drafting I

 

This course stresses the architectural aspect of drafting. The areas of home design, materials and construction are covered. Work is done in computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing.

 

MECHANICAL DRAFTING

1 semester Elective Grades 10-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: "C" average in Drafting I

 

This course will allow the student to advance their mechanical drafting skills with emphasis placed on machine part drawing and dimensioning, cams and gears, and vector. Work is also done in CAD-CAM.

 

PRINCIPLES OF TECHNOLOGY I

2 semesters Elective Grades 10-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: Algebra I

 

Principles of Technology is a course in applied science. It provides an understanding of principles of mechanical, fluid, electrical and thermal systems, and the math associated with them. There will be lab experiments and equipment to implement these principles of technology. The seven units will be force, work, rate, resistance, energy, power and force transformers.

 

PRINCIPLES OF TECHNOLOGY II

2 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: Principles of Technology I

 

This course is a continuation of Principles of Technology I. The seven units covered are momentum, waves & vibration, energy converters, transducers, radiation, light & optical systems, and time constants.

 

 

WOODWORKING I

1 semesters Elective Grades 9-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: None

 

The student learns the three basic elements in wood construction: the kind of material to select, to design the project and how to perform the basic machine operations. There will be a safety test on all machines. The student will be required to make a project-, which requires the use of all machines in the wood shop. With the advise of the instructor the student will select a project. The student is required to get his own wood for the projects.

 

WOODWORKING II

1 semesters Elective Grades 10-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: Woodworking I

 

The student will be required to make a project containing a door or a drawer. Student should have a project selected before signing up for the course. The course of study will be mainly on cabinet making and advanced techniques with the machines. The student is required to get his wood for the project.

 

WOODWORKING III

1 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: Woodworking II

 

Individual study in which a student will build a selected piece of furniture. Plans must be approved before the student signs up. The student is required to get his wood for the project.

Construction & Building Trades

1 Semester, Elective, Grades 10-12

Prerequisite : Drafting I or Woods I

This course explores the construction as a profession, develops skills and knowledge in surveying, concrete, masonry, and an appreciation of construction safety. They will also develop skills and knowledge in floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, exterior finishing, roof materials, doors and window instalation and insulation.

 

Home Maintenance

1 Semester, Elective, Grades 9-12

Prerequisite : none

This course will cover everything you need to know to do handy work around the house.  Your car, basic wiring, drywall and painting, basic plumbing and many other simple fix-it jobs that will save you money down the road and allow you to work on your own house when the time comes.
