Fashion & Clothing

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

 

Clothing I is a beginning level sewing class for the person who wants to learn the proper use, care and control of the sewing machine and serger. This knowledge will be beneficial for anyone interested in sewing, crafts or altering ready-to-wear clothing. Students will study basic textile facts, wardrobe planning, laundry and the application of the elements and principals of design. Two projects will be completed.

 

FOODS & Nutrition I

1 semester Elective Grade 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

 

Foods I is a class for the individual interested in independently and cooperatively learning about various foods and related careers. Subject areas include: nutrition and the preparation, selection and storage of various foods. Lab work includes preparation of fruits, vegetables, salads, low cost meats, eggs, quick breads, pasta, rice, milk, cheese, beverages and appetizers. Mealtime etiquette and planning will be emphasized using resource management; for example time, energy and money. Foreign food cooking, barbecueing and entertaining will also be included.

 

FOODS & Nutrition II

1 Semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: "C" or higher in Foods I

 

Foods II is an advanced foods class that builds on the skills and experiences of Foods I. Lab work includes the preparation of meats, poultry and fish, pies, cakes, yeast breads and international foods. The role of basic nutrition to health is emphasized. Students should find this class extremely helpful prior to moving out on their own.

 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

2 semesters Elective Grades 11-12 2 credits

Prerequisite: None

 

Child development, parenting skills and child care concepts are covered in both the classroom and "hands-on" portions of this class. Students will visit several sites during the "hands-on" nine week segment. These include: local day care homes, pre-schools and handicapped resource rooms. This class should be especially useful for those going into education or medical fields and all who one day hope to be good parents. Class members may also check out "Baby Think It Over "and "Empathy Belly" to experience some of the demands babies make on our lives.

 

 

INDEPENDENT LIVING

1 semester Elective Grade 12 1 credit

Prerequisites: None

 

This course will help you prepare yourself for living on your own after graduation. Students will explore the consumer's role in such areas of life as housing, buying a car, food purchase and preparation, money management, insurance, registering complaints, use of credit, job seeking and keeping, and other current consumer issues. Many community professionals share their knowledge with students.
