BUSINESS
WORD PROCESSING I
1 semester, Elective, Grades 9-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Succesful completion of Keyboarding in Grade 8
Word Processing reviews the basic keyboarding skills and techniques allowing time for each student to achieve their top keyboarding rates. The student will be given ample time to prepare personal and business letters, tables and reports in correct form and arrangement. We will use the new IBM business lab for this hands-on class. Software used will include Windows 98, Microsoft Office 2000, and Internet. Students may be able to use this class for college credit at any Iowa community college.
WORD PROCESSING II
2 semesters, Elective, Grades 10-12, 2 credits
Prerequisites: Word Processing I or Computer Applications I-Office 2000.
Word Processing II provides a quick review of the basic keyboarding skills and techniques. Areas covered include preparing personal and business letters, tables and reports. The student will also learn to do desktop publishing. Students will use the new IBM business lab for this hands-on class. Software used will include Windows 95/98, Microsoft Office 2000,and Microsoft Publisher. Students may be able to receive college credit for this class at any Iowa community college.
Beginning Computer Applications
1 semester, Elective, Grades 9-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Succesful completion of Keyboarding in Grade 8
The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the opportunity to learn to operate PC's computer equipment using windows 98 operating systems. Areas covered include: word processing, Powerpoint, Excel and Desktop Publishing. Students may be able to receive college credit for this class at North Iowa Area Community College.
Advanced Computer Applications
1 semester, Elective, Grades 9-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Computer Applications I - Office 2000
The purpose of Computer Applications is to help students be more productive and to enjoy using the PC's. In addition to advanced databases, spreadsheets, and word processing we will learn to construct web pages using Front Page software. Power Point software will be used to develop personal presentations for the students. Microsoft publisher software will be used to prepare graphic desktop documents.
GENERAL BUSINESS
1 semester, Elective, Grades 10-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: None
General Business is designed to provide background information about functions, responsibilities and organization of modern business. Included are units on the basic principles of economics, the economic role of business, living in the computer age, career exploration, consumer education and using banking, savings, financial services, and credit wisely.
BUSINESS LAW
1 semester, Elective, Grades 11-12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: None
Business Law provides a study of the basic principles of consumer and business law which every student needs to know in his everyday personal and business life. We will study a student's legal rights and duties as citizens and his moral obligations which may be over and above his legal obligations. Units covered include: court systems, torts, crimes, contracts, the law and minors, and bailments.
SALESMANSHIP
1 semester, Elective, Grades 11-12, 1 credit (offered every other year)
Prerequisite: None
Emphasis is given to study of principles and practices of good salesmanship. Basic principles of effective selling are stressed and applied to all types of sales activities with primary attention given to retail selling and to selling as a career. The subject emphasizes the everyday importance of selling. It presents the different types of selling, and the methods through which goods finally reach the consumer.
ACCOUNTING I
2 semesters, Elective, Grades 11-12, 2 credit
Prerequisite: None
Accounting is a study of the methods and systems of preparing and maintaining financial records and provide practice in interpreting financial records. Emphasis is placed on the necessity for accuracy in recording transactions in business operations. The subject includes a study of basic principles of keeping records, the accounting cycle, the preparation and analysis of financial records. After gaining a basic understanding of accounting principles, the student will prepare financial records in Excel. Students may be able to receive college credit for this class at any Iowa community college.
ACCOUNTING II
1 semester, Elective, Grade 12, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Accounting I with a B average
Accounting II is a continuation of Accounting I, beginning with a review of basic accounting principles. Areas covered include partnerships, corporation accounting, cost accounting and computerized accounting. Students may be able to receive college credit at any Iowa community college for this class.
Entrepreneurship
1 Semester, Elective, Grade 11-12, 1 Credit (offered every other year)
Prerequisite: None
Entrepreneurship is the driving force behind the economic growth of our country. This course teaches the essentials of starting and managing a new business venture. The class focuses on the ways of testing the feasibility of an idea, skills needed, how to raise capital, marketing the product, developing a business plan, and more.
