INTRODUCTION TO ART

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: None

 

Introduction to Art places an emphasis on using the elements of art and the principles of design to understand student and professional art. Through the comprehensive textbook, students explore art history, art appreciation, basic drawing and painting techniques and the creative use of color.

 

AN INTRODUCTION TO ART GRADE OF "C" OR BETTER IS A PREREQUISITE FOR ALL ADDITIONAL ART COURSES.

 

DRAWING/PRINTMAKING

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art ("C" grade or better)

 

(Recommended to follow the semester after Introduction to Art.) Drawing is designed to give students extensive experience with drawing as a technique and as a creative art form. Specific work in various pencils, chalk, charcoal, pen and ink, ruling pens and pastels will be covered. Art history will be included as it parallels the work. The drawing segment is approximately three-fourths of the semester. The remaining fourth students will experiment with multiple art forms, to include one or two from the following: linoleum block prints, etchings and silk screen prints in singular and multiple color formats.

 

DESIGN

1 semester Elective Grades 9-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art and Drawing

 

Design is a class in two-dimensional and three-dimensional art media. Specific units in calligraphy, poster art, graphic design, plus an instroduction to digital imaging and pagination are included with an emphasis on the manipulation of the elements of art and the principles of design. Introductory units in fashion design and illustration, interior design and architectural design are included. Individual creative expressions dealing with textural and visual elements will be stressed. SOME SUPPLIES WILL BE FURNISHED BY THE STUDENT.

 

 

PAINTING

1 semester Elective Grades 10-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art and Drawing

 

Painting is primarily work in watercolor, tempera, airbrush and acrylic painting. Drawing is required as preliminary work. Art history will be included as it parallels the work. SOME SUPPLIES WILL BE FURNISHED BY THE STUDENT.

 

 

POTTERY & SCULPTURE

1 semester Elective Grades 10-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art

 

Pottery I is work in clay forming methods such as pinch, coil, slab, and wheel thrown pottery. Firing and glazing will be covered. Art history will be included as it parallels the work. Some supplies will be furnished by the student. A unit in clay modeling and sculpture will be included.

 

CRAFTS/FIBERS AND FABRICS

1 Semester Elective Grades 10-12 1 credit

Prerequisite: Introduction to Art

 

Crafts is an area of production art covering a wide and diverse range of artistic media. Areas covered will be weaving, batik/tie dye, and wearable art. Basic paint, dye and equipment will be furnished; however, all fiber and fabric materials will be furnished by the student at their individual expense.
